I attempt to shoot an animal who is charging but my dog is too close and it forces me to put my gun away... then I die. This even happens if my dog is behind the animal charging me...

You can command dog to lie down when you hear animal charging you.

I second this suggestion. Leave the dog in the lodge. Don't take it with you.

I don't agree.
The pointer is very helpful in finding the axis deer.

This! I just wish it would allow me to shoot over the top of the dog.

I have the pointer with me. Although it's for rabbits and foxes since it's not high enough level for deer.

This might be the main difference.
The rabbit will charge right in line with the dog.
The deer (and fox) will not charge, so typically they will be beside.
With the rabbits, as soon as they scream, I run for a rock (mostly there is one). They will sit right at your feet and wait for the heads hot.

Nevertheless I also had some moments yesterday, when the gun did not fire, when I wanted, but did not see the relationship to the dog. In my case finding deer is more relevant than being mauled (at least in the game!). As soon as I have the 160+, I will continue without.

Maybe not anymore... they were not supposed to do that, so with the patch that behavior is now "fixed"...?

They still do it. I've been hunting rabbits for the last couple hours and have seen them get stuck in their charge a few times. They are too small to get up on big rocks... but if there is anyway for them to get at you, they will find it.
