Black bear charged and was shot and killed at 5 metres it was 215 kg and under 10m so should have qualified for the Mardi Gras mission.
Shot on Redfeather Falls Male Black Bear, Chocolate with .454 El Toro Revolver

Black bears can change state a lot in short time when cornered. They run, trot, charge, walk, run...
Also they tend to charge by running a few meters, then stop, readjust, charge again, or run away.

You will have hit it when its state was "walking", maybe a split second before or after it was charging.
